Peering deep into the core of the Crab Nebula, this close-up image reveals the beating heart of one of the most historic and intensively studied remnants of a supernova, an exploding star. The inner region sends out clock-like pulses of radiation and tsunamis of charged particles embedded in magnetic fields.

Physicists Use Quantum Models to Better Understand Efficiency of Si-Ge Core-Shell Nanowire Transistor

Nearly 1,000 times thinner than a human hair, nanowires can only be understood with quantum mechanics. Using quantum models, physicists from Michigan Technological University have figured out what drives the efficiency of a silicon-germanium (Si-Ge) core-shell nanowire transistor.

MPQ-Scientists Develop Quantum Processor for Single Photons

A team of scientists from the Quantum Dynamics Division of Professor Gerhard Rempe have successfully realized a quantum logic gate where two light quanta play the key actors. Professor Gerhard Rempe is the director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. This attempt was highly challenging as photons do not typically interact at all but pass each other uninterrupted.

New Findings Help Understand Dynamic Behavior of Galaxy Clusters

Working with information sent from the Japanese Hitomi satellite, an international team of researchers that include Stanford scientists has obtained the first views of a supermassive black hole stirring hot gas at the heart of a galaxy cluster, like a spoon stirring cream into coffee.

Plasma Surrounding Central Black Hole Not Swirling as Fast as Suspected

At the center of the Perseus galaxy cluster — a swarm of thousands of galaxies that spans 2 million light years across and is one of the most massive known objects in the universe — a black hole is attempting to stir things up, blowing giant bubbles and jets and ripples of gas out into the galactic plasma.

MPQ Researchers Obtain Evidence of Many-Body Localization in Closed Quantum System

Now a team of scientists around Dr. Christian Groß and Professor Immanuel Bloch (Director at MPQ and Chair of Quantum Optics at LMU Munich), in cooperation with David Huse (Princeton University), has obtained evidence of such a behaviour in a two-dimensional quantum system of cold rubidium atoms trapped in an optical lattice (Science, 24 June 2016).
