Microwave Impedance Microscopy Helps Image Electrically Conductive Boundaries Between a Material's Magnetic Regions

Scientists from Stanford University and the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have made the first direct images showing that electrical currents can flow along the boundaries between tiny magnetic regions of a material that normally doesn’t conduct electricity. The results could have major implications for magnetic memory storage.

Ultra-rapid electrons have been generating top-class X-rays for research here since it opened its doors in 2001. And operations manager Andreas Lüdeke has been on board since the very beginning. Researchers Produce First Chronographic Map of the Milky Way Galaxy’s Halo

University of Notre Dame astronomer Timothy Beers and his Galactic Archaeology group, which includes Notre Dame astronomers Daniela Carollo and Vinicius Placco, have led an international team of researchers that produced the first chronographic (age) map of the halo of the Milky Way galaxy. The halo, along with the disk and bulge, are the primary components of the galaxy.

VISTA Telescope Discovers Huge Numbers of Variable Stars, Clusters and Exploding Stars

The Vista Variables in the Vía Láctea Survey (VVV) ESO public survey is using the VISTA telescope at the Paranal Observatory to take multiple images at different times of the central parts of the galaxy at infrared wavelengths. It is discovering huge numbers of new objects, including variable stars, clusters and exploding stars (eso1101, eso1128 and eso1141 ).
