Black Hole Shreds Star to Pieces

When a star comes too close to a black hole, the intense gravity of the black hole results in tidal forces that can rip the star apart. In these events, called tidal disruptions, some of the stellar debris is flung outward at high speeds, while the rest falls toward the black hole. This causes a distinct X-ray flare that can last for years.

Quantum Algorithm Achieves Quantum Simulation of Fermionic Models in Superconducting Circuits

In collaboration with the Google Inc. research group and the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Quantum Technologies for Information Science (QUTIS) research group of the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque Country has published a paper in the prestigious journal Nature Communications and entitled “Digital quantum simulation of fermionic models with a superconducting circuit”.

Astronomers announced today that they have spotted a large, rocky object disintegrating in its death spiral around a distant white dwarf star. The discovery also confirms a long-standing theory behind the source of white dwarf “pollution” by metals.

New Age of Particle Physics to Probe Deep Structure of Space-Time

Earth came early to the party in the evolving universe. According to a new theoretical study published today in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, when our solar system was born 4.6 billion years ago only eight percent of the potentially habitable planets that will ever form in the universe existed. And, the party won't be over when the sun burns out in another 6 billion years. The bulk of those planets - 92 percent - have yet to be born.

Harvard Quantum Optics Scientist Honoured with 2015 Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics

This year's Julius Springer Prize for Applied Physics will be awarded to Prof. Mikhail Lukin (Harvard University), one of the world's leading scientists in quantum optics and nanophotonics. His work on controlling matter down to the individual atom level and light waves down to the one-photon level has opened the doors to a wide range of new concepts in applied physics. The award, accompanied by US$ 5,000, will be presented at the Magnus-Haus in Berlin, Germany, on 21 October 2015 in conjunction with a public lecture given by the physicist.

Fundamental Laws of Quantum Mechanics Account for the Phenomenon of Thermal Conduction

Thermal conduction “revealed” starting from the foundations of Physics
It was one of the “missing pieces” in the Theoretical Physics of Materials puzzle and today a group of SISSA researchers has finally found it: for the first time, the phenomenon of thermal conduction has been accounted for by the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. The study, just published in Nature Physics, will allow scientists to simulate this phenomenon numerically in extreme temperature and pressure conditions, such as those existing inside planets, or for materials, such as covalent glasses or liquids, to which currently available methods do not apply.

Electronic Nanostars Discovered in 2D Layered Superconductors

Physicists from France and Russia have discovered magnetic disturbances in two-dimensional (2D) layered superconductors, resembling small oscillating stars. These star-like electronic excitations are located around individual magnetic atoms put inside the superconducting material.
