Novel Miniature Particle Accelerator Prototype Utilizes Terahertz Radiation

An interdisciplinary team of researchers has built the first prototype of a miniature particle accelerator that uses terahertz radiation instead of radio frequency structures. A single accelerator module is just 1.5 centimetres long and one millimetre thick.

Cuomo’s high-tech investment strategy driving innovation-based research, development, and economic opportunities across New York State, SUNY Polytechnic Institute’s Colleges of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (SUNY Poly CNSE) today announced that SUNY Poly CNSE Associate Professor of Nanoscience Dr. Mengbing Huang has been awarded $380,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the development of a novel nanofabrication instrument that could pave the way toward exponentially faster and more capable future quantum computer systems.

20th Anniversary of First Discovery of Exoplanets

October 6 marks the 20th anniversary of the first discovery of a planet orbiting a sun-like, or "normal," star beyond our solar system. The planet, called 51 Pegasi b, belongs to a class of planets now known as exoplanets. Since that momentous discovery, thousands more exoplanets have been found in our galaxy.
