Topological insulators behave like insulators at their core and allow good conductivity on their surface. They owe their characteristics to a new quantum state within the material discovered in 2007 and 2009 for 2D and 3D materials, respectively.

Researchers Demonstrate the Use of Personal Computers to Solve Complex Quantum Mechanics Equations More Rapidly than Supercomputers

Physicists from the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, the Lomonosov Moscow State University, have learned to utilize personal computers for calculating complex quantum mechanics equations, which are usually solved only with the assistance of supercomputers. This PC could perform the job much more rapidly. These findings have been reported in the journal Computer Physics Communications.

New Image from Hubble Space Telescope Shows Rare Cosmic Tadpole

This new image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a cosmic tadpole, with its bright head and elongated tail, wriggling through the inky black pool of space. Tadpole galaxies are rare and difficult to find in the local Universe. This striking example, named LEDA 36252, was explored as part of a Hubble study into their mysterious properties — with interesting results.
