Researchers Clock Speed Limit for Electrical Switching in Magnetite

An international team of researchers, which includes UvA physicists Hermann Dürr and Mark Golden, has clocked the speed limit for electrical switching in magnetite (Fe3O4), a naturally magnetic mineral. Their results could drive innovations in the tiny transistors that control the flow of electricity across silicon chips, enabling faster, more powerful computing devices.

Combined Simple Models May Help Interpret Cosmological Observations of the Early Universe

Complicated statistical behaviour observed in complex systems such as early universe can often be understood if it is broken down into simpler ones. Two physicists, Petr Jizba (currently affiliated with the Czech Technical University in Prague), and Fabio Scardigli (now working at Kyoto University in Japan), have just published results in EPJ C pertaining to theoretical predictions of such cosmological systems’ dynamics.

ARI Galaxy Garden Wins Creativity Award at 2013 RHS Tatton Show

The Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) has gained a Gold Medal and creativity award for its Galaxy Garden at the 2013 RHS Tatton Show. The garden titled ‘Watch this Space’, is an artistic interpretation of a rare and important event that is happening in our own galaxy during summer/autumn 2013. A huge cloud of dust and gas will encounter the super-massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy and be torn asunder.

Scientists Identify Internal Electron Accelerator Within Van Allen Radiation Belts

Researchers believe they have solved a lingering mystery about how electrons within Earth’s radiation belt can suddenly become energetic enough to kill orbiting satellites. Thanks to data gathered from an intrepid pair of NASA probes roaming the harsh space environment within the Van Allen radiation belts, scientists have identified an internal electron accelerator operating within the belts.

Prime Near-Infrared Imaging Instrument Shipped for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope

Lockheed Martin, under a contract from the University of Arizona, has completed assembly and testing of the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and has shipped the instrument to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. NIRCam is the prime near-infrared imaging instrument for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Fermilab Plans Celebration for Safe Arrival of Circular Muon g-2 Electromagnet

For the past month, a 50-foot-wide circular electromagnet has been on a fantastic journey between two U.S. Department of Energy national labs: Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. On Friday, July 26, that voyage is expected to conclude. Fermilab is planning a party to celebrate the ring’s safe arrival, and everyone is invited.
