Oldest Solar Twin Identified and Studied Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope

An international team led by astronomers in Brazil has used ESO’s Very Large Telescope to identify and study the oldest solar twin known to date. Located 250 light-years from Earth, the star HIP 102152 is more like the Sun than any other solar twin — except that it is nearly four billion years older.

Nobel Laureate Astrophysicist to Present Lectures at Brookhaven Lab

Nobel Laureate Adam Riess, a distinguished astrophysicist at The Johns Hopkins University and Space Telescope Science Institute, will present two George B. Pegram Lectures at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory in Berkner Hall on Monday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m.

Researchers Demonstrate Dynamical Stabilization of Non-Equilibrium Many-Body Quantum System

A simple pendulum has two equilibrium points: hanging in the “down” position and perfectly inverted in the “up” position. While the “down” position is a stable equilibrium, the inverted position is definitely not stable. Any infinitesimal deviation from perfectly inverted is enough to cause the pendulum to eventually swing down.
