Researchers Endeavor to Measure Radius of the Neutron Using a Lead Target

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, in Virginia houses the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), a 1.4 kilometer-long, racetrack-shaped machine that propels electrons to nearly the speed of light before striking its target. It is the world’s most advanced electron accelerator for studying the basic elements of the atom’s nucleus.

New ‘Tsunami Wave’ from the Sun Hits Voyager 1

NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has experienced a new "tsunami wave" from the sun as it sails through interstellar space. Such waves are what led scientists to the conclusion, in the fall of 2013, that Voyager had indeed left our sun's bubble, entering a new frontier.

CERN Director General Presents Results from CERN at 37th ICHEP

Speaking at press conference held during the 37th International Conference on High Energy Physics, ICHEP, in Valencia, Spain this morning CERN Director General Rolf Heuer gave a resume of results from CERN that are being presented. The conference, which began last Thursday with three days of parallel sessions, now moves on to plenary sessions until Wednesday, summing up the current state of the art in the field. The plenary sessions will be webcast.

Thomas J. Weiler, professor of physics in the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University, has been named a Simons Foundation Fellow in Theoretical Physics for his work with elementary particle physics and astrophysics.

Superconducting Qubits and Devices Constructed Out of Silicon

Theorists propose a way to make superconducting quantum devices such as Josephson junctions and qubits, atom-by-atom, inside a silicon crystal. Such systems could combine the most promising aspects of silicon spin qubits with the flexibility of superconducting circuits. The researcher's results have now been published in Nature Communications.
