Hyper-Kamiokande Project Inaugural Symposium to be Held January 31st, 2015

The Hyper-Kamiokande project aims to address the mysteries of the origin and evolution of the Universe's matter and to confront theories of elementary particle unification. To realize these goals the project will combine a high intensity neutrino beam from the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) with a new detector based upon precision neutrino experimental techniques developed in Japan.

Milky Way Galaxy Could Be a Wormhole

"If we combine the map of the dark matter in the Milky Way with the most recent Big Bang model to explain the universe and we hypothesise the existence of space-time tunnels, what we get is that our galaxy could really contain one of these tunnels, and that the tunnel could even be the size of the galaxy itself. But there's more", explains Paolo Salucci, astrophysicist of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste and a dark matter expert. "We could even travel through this tunnel, since, based on our calculations, it could be navigable. Just like the one we've all seen in the recent film 'Interstellar'". Salucci is among the authors of the paper recently published in Annals of Physics.

High Magnetization Sets the Stage for Formation of Massive Stars

Magnetic fields in massive dark clouds are strong enough to support the regions against collapse due to their own gravity. A study lead by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn has now shown for the first time that high magnetization sets the stage for the formation of stars much more massive than the sun. This was demonstrated in observations of polarized dust emission from two of the most massive clouds in our Milky Way, the “Brick” and “Snake”.

Plasmonic Flat-Lens BES Helps Focus Light Into Nanoscale Colloidal Quantum Dot Photodetector

High-sensitivity photodetection is at the heart of many optoelectronic applications, including spectroscopy, imaging, surveillance, remote sensing and medical diagnostics. Achieving the highest possible sensitivity for a given photodetector technology requires the development of ultra-small-footprint detectors, as the noise sources scale with the volume of the semiconductor. This must be accomplished without sacrificing neither the optically active area of the detector nor its responsivity.

Principal Investigator of NuSTAR Awarded 2015 Rossi Prize in High-Energy Astrophysics

The 2015 Rossi Prize has been awarded to Fiona Harrison, a professor at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, for her "groundbreaking work on supernova remnants, neutron stars and black holes enabled by NuSTAR." NuSTAR is NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array mission. The award, granted by the American Astronomical Society's High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD), is the top prize in high-energy astrophysics.
