Peter E. Toschek of Institut für Laser-Physik Wins Herbert Walther Award

The Optical Society (OSA) and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) are proud to announce that the 2015 Herbert Walther Award will be presented to Peter E. Toschek of the Institut für Laser-Physik, Universität Hamburg, Germany for his pioneering experiments to laser cooling and trapping of single ions and for his contributions to the understanding of the principles of laser spectroscopy as well as of atomic physics.

The KIT Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics Center (KCETA) of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) grants the Julius Wess Award 2014 to the Russian-US American scientist Arkady Vainshtein. Professor Vainshtein is considered one of the most renowned theoretical particle physicists of the second half of the 20th century.

CERN Opens IdeaSquare Innovation Facility in Geneva

The European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN has opened a new innovation facility in Geneva. The facility, which has been named IdeaSquare, is modelled on Finnish Aalto University's Design Factory and Aalto University has assisted in the planning and implementation of the project. IdeaSquare will serve as an environment for technological development and its purpose is to make the technology developed at CERN more widely available for society.

“What really impressed me was the trip down,” said astrophysicist James Buckley, PhD, speaking of the vertical mile he traveled to get to the site of an underground dark-matter experiment. “You can see you’re moving at a pretty good clip, which, by the way, is three times slower than the cage used to drop when it was a mine. It took us 10 minutes to get down a mile. You just watch the earth flashing by and every once in a while you go past a boarded up tunnel.”
