According to a study published online in Nature Geoscience July 6, Mercury and other unusually metal-rich objects in the solar system may be relics left behind by collisions in the early solar system that built the other planets.

In the middle of the 19th century, the massive binary system Eta Carinae underwent an eruption that ejected at least 10 times the sun's mass and made it the second-brightest star in the sky. Now, a team of astronomers has used extensive new observations to create the first high-resolution 3-D model of the expanding cloud produced by this outburst.

Hotspot for Ultrahigh-Energy Cosmic Rays Found in the Northern Sky

An observatory run by the University of Utah found a "hotspot" beneath the Big Dipper emitting a disproportionate number of the highest-energy cosmic rays. The discovery moves physics another step toward identifying the mysterious sources of the most energetic particles in the universe.

Light from tiny galaxies over 13 billion years ago played a larger role than previously thought in creating the conditions in the universe as we know it today, a new study has found. Researchers Endeavor to Measure Radius of the Neutron Using a Lead Target

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, in Virginia houses the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), a 1.4 kilometer-long, racetrack-shaped machine that propels electrons to nearly the speed of light before striking its target. It is the world’s most advanced electron accelerator for studying the basic elements of the atom’s nucleus.

CERN Director General Presents Results from CERN at 37th ICHEP

Speaking at press conference held during the 37th International Conference on High Energy Physics, ICHEP, in Valencia, Spain this morning CERN Director General Rolf Heuer gave a resume of results from CERN that are being presented. The conference, which began last Thursday with three days of parallel sessions, now moves on to plenary sessions until Wednesday, summing up the current state of the art in the field. The plenary sessions will be webcast.
