New ALMA Data Shows First Steps of Galaxy Merger in Early Universe

Nestled among a triplet of young galaxies more than 12.5 billion light-years away is a cosmic powerhouse: a galaxy that is producing stars nearly 1,000 times faster than our own Milky Way. This energetic starburst galaxy, known as AzTEC-3, together with its gang of calmer galaxies may represent the best evidence yet that large galaxies grow from the merger of smaller ones in the early Universe, a process known as hierarchical merging.

Spintronics could lead to efficient circuits and electrical devices that do not waste energy through friction and heat.

Researchers studying what appears to be a beefed-up version of our solar system have discovered that it is encased in a halo of fine dust. IC 310 Observations Provide Clue to How Jets Form Near Black Holes

The radio galaxy IC 310 in the Perseus constellation is approximately 260 million light years away from Earth. Astronomers assume there is a supermassive black hole at its centre. This black hole was the setting for an extremely powerful outburst of gamma rays which was observed by the MAGIC telescopes on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The source exhibited one of the fastest radiation variations which researchers have ever been able to detect in an extragalactic object at these energies.
