A Single Nuclear Spin Could Possibly be Detected at Room Temperature

For the first time, a researcher at the University of Waterloo has theoretically demonstrated that it is possible to detect a single nuclear spin at room temperature, which could pave the way for new approaches to medical diagnostics.

Magic Wavelengths to Tune Rydberg Atoms for Quantum Information Applications

Rydberg atoms, atoms whose outermost electrons are highly excited but not ionized, might be just the thing for processing quantum information. These outsized atoms can be sustained for a long time in a quantum superposition condition -- a good thing for creating qubits -- and they can interact strongly with other such atoms, making them useful for devising the kind of logic gates needed to process information. Scientists at JQI (*) and at other labs are pursuing this promising research area.

Penn State Student Honored for Co-Discovery of Never-Before-Seen Pulsar

A team of highly determined high school students, which included current Penn State University sophomore and Schreyer Honors College Scholar Cecilia McGough, has discovered a never-before-seen pulsar by painstakingly analyzing data from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Further observations by astronomers using the GBT have revealed that this pulsar has the widest orbit of any around a neutron star and is part of only a handful of double neutron star systems.

ONR Honors JQI Fellow with Young Investigator Award

JQI Fellow Mohammad Hafezi was announced as a recipient of a 2015 ONR Young Investigator award. ONR's website describes the program as being designed to promote the professional development of early-career academic scientists – called investigators, or YIPs – both as researchers and instructors. For awardees, the funding supports laboratory equipment, graduate student stipends and scholarships, and other expenses critical to ongoing and planned investigational studies.

Brookhaven Lab Team Receives Prestigious Award for Building Superconducting Hadron Collider Magnets

Following the much-anticipated recent restart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, a 17-member team primarily based at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory was recognized with one of DOE's most prestigious awards for successfully completing two superconducting magnets for the 17-mile-circumference collider.

Whitewood Encryption Systems, Inc., a developer of next-generation systems of data encryption that leverage advanced cryptography technologies emerging from U.S. centers of research excellence, announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 9,002,009 with claims covering miniaturized hardware that can be fabricated at-scale to facilitate secure multi-party quantum cryptography and secure all types of communications.

Physical Review Publishes Paper on Cosmic Rayleigh Scattering

UBC theoretical cosmology graduate student Elham Alipour’s paper Effects of Rayleigh scattering on the CMB and cosmic structure has been selected as an Editor’s Suggestion in Physical Review D for its “novel insight on the effect of Rayleigh scattering on cosmological power spectra.” This distinction is reserved for a small number of papers deemed to be of particular interest, importance, or clarity.

Gaseous Halo Enveloping the Andromeda Galaxy More Massive Than Previously Believed

Scientists using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have discovered that the immense halo of gas enveloping the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest massive galactic neighbor, is about six times larger and 1,000 times more massive than previously measured. The dark, nearly invisible halo stretches about a million light-years from its host galaxy, halfway to our own Milky Way galaxy. This finding promises to tell astronomers more about the evolution and structure of majestic giant spirals, one of the most common types of galaxies in the universe.

New data from MESSENGER, the spacecraft that orbited Mercury for four years before crashing into the planet a week ago, reveals Mercury's magnetic field is almost four billion years old. The discovery helps scientists piece together the history of Mercury, the closest planet to the sun and one about which we knew very little before MESSENGER.
