Quantum Materials Enters Agreement with STAR Park to Quadruple Quantum Dot Production Space

Quantum Materials Corp today announced it has signed an agreement with STAR Park that will quadruple the Company's Quantum Dot production space when the new state-of-the-art lab and offices are completed on or before June 2015. The Company is also recruiting to double its scientific staff effective January 2015.

Scientists Demonstrate Practicality of Plasma Wakefield Acceleration

Scientists from the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and the University of California, Los Angeles have shown that a promising technique for accelerating electrons on waves of plasma is efficient enough to power a new generation of shorter, more economical accelerators. This could greatly expand their use in areas such as medicine, national security, industry and high-energy physics research.

Gluons Contribute to Proton Spin

Results from experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), a particle collider located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, reveal new insights about how quarks and gluons, the subatomic building blocks of protons, contribute to the proton’s intrinsic angular momentum, a property more commonly known as “spin.” Specifically, the findings show for the first time that gluons make a significant contribution to proton spin, and that transient “sea quarks”—which form primarily when gluons split—also play a role.

Structural Disorder Can Counteract Thermal Disorder and Lower Overall System Disorder

If you took the junk from the back of your closet and combined it with the dirty laundry already on your floor, you would have an even bigger mess. While this principle will likely always hold true for our bedrooms, it turns out that in certain situations, combining messes can actually reduce the disorder of the whole. An international team of researchers from Slovenia and Iran has identified a set of conditions in which adding disorder to a system makes it more orderly. This behavior is known as antifragility, a concept introduced recently to describe similar phenomena in statistics, economics and social science.

Study Suggests Equivalence Between Generalised Casimir Forces and Weak Nuclear Interaction Forces

A new theoretical work establishes a long-sought-after connection between nuclear particles and electromagnetic theories. Its findings suggest that there is an equivalence between generalised Casimir forces and those that are referred to as weak nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons.

Researchers Carry out Accurate Study on Gas-Dust Cocoon Surrounding GG Tau A System

An international team of astronomers, including researchers at the LAB (CNRS/Université de Bordeaux), IPAG (CNRS/Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble 1) and IRAM (CNRS/MPG/IGN), has carried out the most accurate study so far of the cocoon of gas and dust surrounding the GG Tau A system. By combining complementary observations at submillimeter (ALMA and IRAM) wavelengths with those at infrared (VLTI/ESO) wavelengths, the researchers were able to identify the complex dynamics at work in GG Tau.
