ESO's MUSE Instrument Provides Astronomers Best Ever 3D View of Deep Universe

The MUSE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope has given astronomers the best ever three-dimensional view of the deep Universe. After staring at the Hubble Deep Field South region for only 27 hours, the new observations reveal the distances, motions and other properties of far more galaxies than ever before in this tiny piece of the sky. They also go beyond Hubble and reveal previously invisible objects.

JQI Researchers Demonstrate Modular Entanglement Between Two Atomic Systems

JQI researchers, under the direction of Christopher Monroe have demonstrated modular entanglement between two atomic systems, separated by one meter. Here, photons are the long distance information carriers entangling multiple qubit modules. Inside of a single module, quantized collective vibrations called phonons connect individual qubits.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has named University of Virginia astronomer Shane Davis as a Sloan Research Fellow for 2015. Davis, an assistant professor of astronomy, is a theoretical astrophysicist who is an expert on using large computer simulations to model complex systems in the universe.

Breakthrough Technique Holds Potential for Particle Accelerator Applications

An international team of researchers working at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has demonstrated that a bent silicon crystal can bend the paths of focused, very energetic electron beams much more than magnets used today. The method could be of interest for particle accelerator applications such as next-generation X-ray lasers that will help scientists unravel atomic structures and motions in unprecedented detail.

RUB Engineers Optimize Spin Lasers for Rapid Data Transfer

RUB engineers have developed a new concept for accelerating data transfer in server farms. To this end, the team at the Chair of Photonics and Terahertz Technology applies a quantum-mechanical variable, i.e. the spin. RUBIN, the science magazine published by the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, reports on how researchers optimise so-called spin lasers for data transfer.

Scientists have discovered the brightest quasar in the early universe, powered by the most massive black hole yet known at that time.
