The MPG/ESO 2.2m Telescope at La Silla Observatory Captures Excellent Pictures of Prawn Nebula

Deeply immersed in this huge stellar nursery are three clusters of hot young stars -- only a few million years old -- which glow brightly in ultraviolet light. It is the light from these stars that causes the nebula's gas clouds to glow. The radiation strips electrons from atoms -- a process known as ionisation -- and when they recombine they release energy in the form of light. Each chemical element emits light in characteristic colours and the large clouds of hydrogen in the nebula are the cause of its rich red glow.

Geologists and Physicists Generate World’s First Global Map of Antineutrino Emissions

The neutrino and its antimatter cousin, the antineutrino, are the tiniest subatomic particles known to science. These particles are byproducts of nuclear reactions within stars (including our sun), supernovae, black holes and human-made nuclear reactors. They also result from radioactive decay processes deep within the Earth, where radioactive heat and the heat left over from the planet’s formation fuels plate tectonics, volcanoes and Earth’s magnetic field.

Different Magnesium Compounds Could Be Abundant Inside Other Distant Planets

As astronomers continue finding new rocky planets around distant stars, high-pressure physicists are considering what the interiors of those planets might be like and how their chemistry could differ from that found on Earth. New work from a team including three Carnegie scientists demonstrates that different magnesium compounds could be abundant inside other planets as compared to Earth. Their work is published by Scientific Reports.

Gravitational Microlensing Helps Discover Distant Gas Giant Exoplanet

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii have made independent confirmations of an exoplanet orbiting far from its central star. The planet was discovered through a technique called gravitational microlensing.

Powerful Aurora Discovered on Low-Mass Star

Astronomers have discovered the first aurora ever seen in an object beyond our Solar System. The aurora -- similar to the famous "Northern Lights" on Earth -- is 10,000 times more powerful than any previously seen. They found the aurora not from a planet, but from a low-mass star at the boundary between stars and brown dwarfs.

Astronomer and instrumentation expert Stephen Shectman of the Carnegie Observatories has been selected to receive the Maria and Eric Muhlmann Award from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, “for important research results based upon development of groundbreaking instruments and techniques.” He will receive the prize in October.

Researchers Find a Way to Observe and Control Quantum Motion of an Object

Consider the pendulum of a grandfather clock. If you forget to wind it, you will eventually find the pendulum at rest, unmoving. However, this simple observation is only valid at the level of classical physics--the laws and principles that appear to explain the physics of relatively large objects at human scale. However, quantum mechanics, the underlying physical rules that govern the fundamental behavior of matter and light at the atomic scale, state that nothing can quite be completely at rest.

CQT's Small Photon-Entangling Quantum System Survives October 2014 Rocket Explosion

But all was not lost. Earlier this year, the team learned that the explosion that destroyed the rocket did not destroy CQT's Small Photon-Entangling Quantum System (SPEQS). The satellite containing SPEQS was found on a beach. Now tests this month have shown that it's still working. The news is reported in the 27 August edition of Singapore newspaper the Straits Times.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have found that Markarian 231 (Mrk 231), the nearest galaxy to Earth that hosts a quasar, is powered by two central black holes furiously whirling about each other.

New Images Emerge from Dwarf Planet Ceres Using Dawn Space Probe

NASA’S Dawn space probe has reached the last intermediate leg on the spiral orbit which will bring it to within a few hundred kilometres of the dwarf planet Ceres by the end of the year. Ceres is the largest celestial body in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Since 17 August, the Dawn spacecraft has been a mere 1470 kilometres away from its surface.
