Mysterious Nova Vul 1670 Could Have Been an Eruptive Star

In 1670 a new star appeared in the sky, which could even be seen with the naked eye. It was not a nova, but a much rarer phenomenon: the violent collision of two stars. The traces left of it today are so faint that very careful analysis using modern submillimetre telescopes was needed to finally unravel the mystery more than 340 years later.

Project on Impact of Cosmic Rays on Galaxy and Cluster Formation Wins ERC Consolidator Grant

HITS astrophysicist Priv.-Doz. Dr. Christoph Pfrommer has successfully applied for a Consolidator Grant of the European research Council (ERC). His research project CRAGSMAN - The Impact of Cosmic Rays on Galaxy and Cluster Formation“ will be funded for five years with about € 2 million. His grant proposal belongs to the panel “Universe Sciences”, in which 14 of the 372 grants were awarded, and only 3 to scientists in Germany.

A team of researchers, led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor Yuri Lvov, has found an elegant explanation for the long-standing Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) problem, first proposed in 1953, investigated with one of the world's first digital computers, and now considered the foundation of experimental mathematics.

Two Stars with Unusual Chemical Content Uncovered in Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy

A Carnegie-based search of nearby galaxies for their oldest stars has uncovered two stars in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy that were born shortly after the galaxy formed, approximately 13 billion years ago. The unusual chemical content of the stars may have originated in a single supernova explosion from the first generation of Sculptor stars. The team, which includes Carnegie's Josh Simon, Ian Thompson, and Stephen Shectman, will publish their work in The Astrophysical Journal.

NASA Telescope Documents Outburst of Young Protostar in Orion Star-Formation Complex

Using data from orbiting observatories, including NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, and from ground-based facilities, an international team of astronomers has discovered an outburst from a star thought to be in the earliest phase of its development. The eruption, scientists say, reveals a sudden accumulation of gas and dust by an exceptionally young star, or protostar, known as HOPS 383.

Anesthetics May Prevent Consciousness in ‘Quantum Channels’ Deep Inside Brain Neurons

Oil and water don’t mix. Can that simple fact explain consciousness? In a special issue of 'Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry’ scientists from Nova Southeastern University, the University of Alberta and the University of Arizona find evidence that anesthetics act to prevent consciousness in non-polar, oil-like ‘quantum channels’ deep inside proteins, deep inside brain neurons.
