Cutting-edge simulations run at NERSC over a two-year period are helping physicists better understand what influences the behavior of the plasma turbulence that is driven by the intense heating necessary to create fusion energy. Use your computer without the need to start it up: a new type of magnetic memory makes it possible. This ‘MRAM’ is faster, more efficient and robust than other kinds of data storage. However, switching bits still requires too much electrical power to make large-scale application practicable. Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) have discovered a smart way of solving this problem by using a ‘bending current’. They publish their findings today in the journal Nature Communications.

Physicists Efficiently Implement Shor’s Algorithm in Ion-Trap Based Quantum Computer

Shor’s algorithm is likely the most famous quantum algorithm. He solves a centuries-old problem, namely the factoring of numbers into primes. Physicists led by Rainer Blatt joined forces with scientists at MIT, led by Isaac Chuang, to efficiently implement Shor’s algorithm in an ion-trap based quantum computer. Here their approach can be directly applied to larger numbers.

Astronomers Measure the Farthest Galaxy Ever Seen in the Universe

By pushing NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to its limits, an international team of astronomers has shattered the cosmic distance record by measuring the farthest galaxy ever seen in the universe. This surprisingly bright infant galaxy, named GN-z11, is seen as it was 13.4 billion years in the past, just 400 million years after the Big Bang. GN-z11 is located in the direction of the constellation of Ursa Major.

New Study Radically Changes Perception of Surface of Mars

The surface of the planet Mars tilted by 20 to 25 degrees 3 to 3.5 billion years ago. This was caused by a massive volcanic structure, the Tharsis volcanic dome1, which is the largest in the Solar System. Because of its extraordinary mass, it caused the outer layers of Mars (its crust and mantle) to rotate around its core.
