Astronomers Measure 3D Stellar Motions of Individual Stars Using NASA/ESA Hubble and ESA's Gaia

A team of astronomers used data from both the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and ESA’s Gaia satellite to directly measure the 3D motions of individual stars in a nearby galaxy. The achieved accuracy is better than anything previously measured for a galaxy beyond the Milky Way.

Astronomers Make First Measurement of Proper Motions of 15 Stars in Sculptor Galaxy

By combining data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gaia mission, University of Groningen astronomers have been able to measure the proper motion of 15 stars in the Sculptor Galaxy, the first such measurement of stars in a small galaxy outside the Milky Way.

An international partnership between researchers from RIKEN’s Ulmer Fundamental Symmetries Laboratory (FSL), Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics, Heidelberg, and GSI Darmstadt has culminated in the use of highly accurate methods for making the most accurate evaluation of the proton’s magnetic moment made till date, and discovered it to be 2.79284734462 ± 0.00000000082 nuclear magnetons—the unit usually used to evaluate this feature.
