Block Engineering, Pfizer Collaborate to Develop Quantum Cascade Laser System for Pharmaceutical Industry

Block Engineering, the leader in Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) spectroscopy, announced today that it has signed a Collaborative Agreement with Pfizer, Inc. to develop a QCL-based system for real-time, noncontact Cleaning Verification of vessels during pharmaceutical manufacturing. The technology is based on Block's commercially available LaserScan (TM) Analyzer, which will be tailored to address the specific requirements of this application.

Brilliant Stars Emerge from Dusty Stellar Nursery

An evocative new image from ESO shows a dark cloud where new stars are forming, along with a cluster of brilliant stars that have already emerged from their dusty stellar nursery. The new picture was taken with the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile and is the best image ever taken in visible light of this little-known object.

What is normal to most people in winter has so far been impossible in physics: a minus temperature. On the Celsius scale minus temperatures are only surprising in summer. On the absolute temperature scale, which is used by physicists and is also called the Kelvin scale, it is not possible to go below zero – at least not in the sense of getting colder than zero kelvin.

Quantum Technology Helps Demonstrate 'Secure Bit Commitment' Technology

Many scenarios in business and communication require that two parties share information without either being sure if they can trust the other. Examples include secure auctions and identification at ATM machines. Exploiting the strange properties of the quantum world could be the answer to dealing with such distrust: researchers at the Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at the National University of Singapore have used the quantum properties of light to perform the world's first demonstration of a 'secure bit commitment' technology. The work is described in Nature Communications.
