Niels Bohr Institute Discovery Center for Particle Physics Receives Research Grant

The Discovery Center for Particle Physics at the Niels Bohr Institute has received a grant of 40 million kroner from the Danish National Research Foundation. This grant means that the Discovery Center, which was established in January 2010, can continue as a Center of Excellence for an additional five years from January 2015 through the end of 2019.

Black Holes May Have Hair

A black hole. A simple and clear concept, at least according to the hypothesis by Roy Kerr, who in 1963 proposed a "clean" black hole model, which is the current theoretical paradigm. From theory to reality things may be quite different. According to a new research carried out by a group of scientists that includes Thomas Sotiriou, a physicist of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste, black holes may be much "dirtier" than what Kerr believed.

ERC Awards Advanced Grants for Quantum Research

Klapwijk, who works at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University of Technology, will use the grant for his research into quantum materials. He attempts to understand the electrodynamic properties of quantum materials down to the nanoscale. He examines materials in which different ground states compete with each other. This gives rise to local differences in the material's electronic properties such as the conductivity and relative permittivity.
