Nobel Prize Winner to Shed New Light on Schrödinger’s Cat at Dublin City University

Dublin City University and Magnet Broadband are delighted to confirm that Professor Serge Haroche will visit DCU as the latest Nobel Prize winner to speak in the highly popular Nobel Laureate Lecture Series. Professor Haroche, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2012, will offer the general public a unique insight into the strange world of Quantum Physics and how its applications can transform life as we know it, now and in the future. Professor Haroche’s lecture, Shedding New Light on Schrödinger’s Cat, will take place in DCU on Monday 11th November at 11:00am.

UCSB Professor Wins Physics Frontiers Prize for the Second Time

UC Santa Barbara physics professor and permanent member of the university's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) Joseph Polchinski is one of several laureates for the Milner Foundation's 2014 Physics Frontiers Prize. According to the organization, this prize recognizes "transformative achievements in the field of fundamental physics and aim(s) to provide recipients with more freedom and opportunity to pursue future accomplishments." This is Polchinski's second win in two years.

Novel Superconducting Detector Array Measures Energy of Individual Photons

Semiconductors have had a nice run, but for certain applications, such as astrophysics, they are being edged out by superconductors. Ben Mazin, assistant professor of physics at UC Santa Barbara, has developed a superconducting detector array that measures the energy of individual photons. The design and construction of an instrument based on these arrays, as well as an analysis of its commissioning data, appear in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.

Physicists Successfully Generate Single Color Quantum Light Particles for Quantum Information Applications

Physicists at the University of Basel have been successful in generating photons - the quantum particles of light – with only one color. This is useful for quantum information. The scientists have actively stabilized the wavelength of the photons emitted by a semiconductor thereby neutralizing the charge noise in the semiconductor.
