First Observation of Topological Effects for Light in Two Dimensions

Topology -- theunderstanding of how things are connected -- remains abstract, even with the popular example of doughnuts and coffee cups. This concept, esoteric as it appears, is also neat because it is the basis for creating ultrastable quantum "playgrounds." In topological systems, certain quantum behaviors can be carefully probed and even harnessed for all kinds of practical applications—from metrology to electronics.

SLAC Theorist Named Co-Winner of J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics

SLAC particle theorist Lance Dixon has been named co-winner of the 2014 J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics, awarded each year by the American Physical Society "to recognize and encourage outstanding achievement in particle theory." He'll join his colleagues and collaborators, Zvi Bern of UCLA and David Kosower of the French research institute CEA-Saclay, to accept the $10,000 award in Savannah, Ga., next April.

Niels Bohr Institute Officially Admits its Participation in IceCube Neutrino Research Project

The Niels Bohr Institute is now officially admitted as a full member of the IceCube collaboration. IceCube is an enormous particle detector built into a cubic kilometer of ice at the South Pole. IceCube detects neutrinos, which are coming from space or are created by cosmic rays in the atmosphere.

Newly Discovered Asteroid Has One-in-63,000 Chance of Impacting Earth

Newly discovered asteroid 2013 TV135 made a close approach to Earth on Sept. 16, when it came within about 4.2 million miles (6.7 million kilometers). The asteroid is initially estimated to be about 1,300 feet (400 meters) in size and its orbit carries it as far out as about three quarters of the distance to Jupiter's orbit and as close to the sun as Earth's orbit.

The Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre was featured as a location in Doors Open Waterloo Region on Saturday, September 21. This year’s Doors Open theme was modern architecture. More than 1,200 visitors toured the Lazaridis Centre to explore the one-of-a-kind facility that is home to the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN).
