Star Formation May Be More Recent Than Previously Predicted

The latest data release from the ESA satellite Planck consortium – just published in Astronomy and Astrophysics – reveals a surprise: star formation in the Universe may be more recent than previously indicated by the analysis of Planck’s predecessor, the NASA WMAP satellite. The observation was made possible by the new maps of Planck’s low-‐frequency instrument (LFI), produced by the Trieste Data Processing Centre run by INAF-‐OATS in collaboration with the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) and the LFI Consortium.

New Possibilities for Manipulating Electrons on Tips of Graphitic Nanocones

This approach is the object of an entire field of study, known as spintronics. Turbulence May Influence Evolution of the Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud

Molecular cores are dense condensations within molecular clouds, in which stars are born. Guoyin Zhang et al. obtained 350 ìm dust continuum data using the SHARC-II camera at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) telescope. A 350 ìm map covering 0.25 deg2 of the Ophiuchus molecular cloud was created by mosaicing 56 separate scans.

Researchers Discover Generation of Josephson Vortex in Atomic-Layered Superconductors

A research group at the NIMS (Sukekatsu Ushioda, president) International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA, Masakazu Aono, director), consisting of post-doctoral researcher Shunsuke Yoshizawa, MANA researcher Takashi Uchihashi, MANA principal investigator Tomonobu Nakayama, post-doctoral researcher Takuto Kawakami and MANA principal investigator Xiao Hu, and a research team at the Institute for Solid State Physics of the University of Tokyo, consisting of post-doctoral researcher Kim Howon and associate professor Yukio Hasegawa, discovered that in an atomic-scale thick superconductor formed on a silicon surface, a single-atom difference in height between atomic layers (atomic step) acts as a Josephson junction that controls the flow of supercurrent.
