The Department is pleased to extend its congratulations to Professor Jocelyn Monroe and Dr Tracey Berry who led a successful bid to secure funding from the STFC for a project entitled: “Hyper-Kamiokande (UK Strategy for Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments)” [£119,714].

Novel Superconducting Transistor Can Be Switched Reversibly by Light-Irradiation

A research team led by Prof. Hiroshi M. Yamamoto of the Institute for Molecular Science, National Institutes of Natural Sciences has developed a novel superconducting transistor which can be switched reversibly between ON and OFF by light-irradiation. This achievement is a milestone for future high-speed switching devices or highly-sensitive optical sensors.

New Project on Quantum Phenomena in Hybrid Systems Receives EUR 1.6 Million Grant

A research project looking at quantum phenomena that involves the physicists Professor Ron Folman of Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel, and Professor Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), Germany, as well as their respective teams has been granted EUR 1.6 million in support through the German-Israeli Project Cooperation (DIP) program.

A Very Lopsided Explosion May Have Produced the G299 Supernova Remnant

Because the debris fields of exploded stars, known as supernova remnants, are very hot, energetic, and glow brightly in X-ray light, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has proven to be a valuable tool in studying them. The supernova remnant called G299.2-2.9 (or G299 for short) is located within our Milky Way galaxy, but Chandra’s new image of it is reminiscent of a beautiful flower here on Earth.

BNL Begins Latest Round of Collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

If you want to unravel the secrets of proton spin, put a "twist" in your colliding proton beams. This technique, tried and perfected at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC)—a particle collider and U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory—orients the colliding protons' spins in a particular direction, somewhat like tiny bar magnets with their North poles all pointing up.
