JAXA’s ASTRO-H to Provide Breakthroughs in High-Energy Phenomena in the Cosmos

Black hole enthusiasts, galaxy cluster aficionados, and X-ray astronomers have much to be excited about. On Friday, Feb. 12, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will be launching their sixth satellite dedicated to X-ray astronomy, ASTRO-H, from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan. The observatory carries a state-of-the-art instrument and two telescope mirrors built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The launch is scheduled at 3:45 a.m. EST.

HD 97300 Illuminates IC 2631, Reflection Nebula

A newly formed star lights up the surrounding cosmic clouds in this new image from ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. Dust particles in the vast clouds that surround the star HD 97300 diffuse its light, like a car headlight in enveloping fog, and create the reflection nebula IC 2631. Although HD 97300 is in the spotlight for now, the very dust that makes it so hard to miss heralds the birth of additional, potentially scene-stealing, future stars.

An international team of researchers gained new insights into magnetic spin waves. Spin waves can evolve in electrically non-conducting materials given a specific temperature gradient and then be converted into electrical energy in an adjacent metallic layer. Thus, thermal energy can be converted into electrical energy.

Researchers Investigate Light-Matter Interactions to Build Quantum Circuit Components

Quantum computers promise a vast improvement in speed over classical binary computers. The computers rely on quantum bits, or “qubits,” a system that can exist in more than one state at the same time, allowing the computers to consider multiple solutions simultaneously. Plasmons, quasiparticles arising from the collective motion of electrons on the surface of a metal, can strongly modify the behavior of nearby light, and could be instrumental in building some of the key components of a quantum circuit. But far more must be learned about their effects to develop them as a material.

CERN Researchers Recreate Big Bang ‘Primordial Soup’

Researchers have recreated the universe’s primordial soup in miniature format by colliding lead atoms with extremely high energy in the 27 km long particle accelerator, the LHC at CERN in Geneva. The primordial soup is a so-called quark-gluon plasma and researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute, among others, have measured its liquid properties with great accuracy at the LHC’s top energy. The results have been submitted to Physical Review Letters, which is the top scientific journal for nuclear and particle physics.

The world we see is embedded in an invisible cosmic web of dark matter – a ghostly form of matter that doesn’t emit light and rarely bumps into things. Although no one has ever directly observed the mysterious substance, scientists have seen signs of its existence because its gravity pulls on ordinary matter – the stuff we’re made of. In fact, it seems to be the scaffolding on which galaxies are built. Without dark matter, which is five times more prevalent than normal matter, the universe would look quite different: neither we nor our Milky Way would be around today.

New Way to Generate Very Low-Resistance Electric Current Relies on Chiral Magnetic Effect

Scientists at the U.S Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University have discovered a new way to generate very low-resistance electric current in a new class of materials. The discovery, which relies on the separation of right- and left-"handed" particles, points to a range of potential applications in energy, quantum computing, and medical imaging, and possibly even a new mechanism for inducing superconductivity—the ability of some materials to carry current with no energy loss.

Researchers Non-Destructively Measure Quantum State of Molecular Ion for First Time

The interaction of thermal energy from the environment with motional degrees of freedom is well known and often referred to as Brownian motion (also thermal motion). But in the case of polar molecules, the internal degrees of freedom - in particular the rotational quantum state - are also influenced by the thermal radiation. So far, the detection of the rotational state was only possible by destroying the molecule.
