Compact Galaxies with ‘Red Nuggets’ Didn’t Disappear

In 2005 the Hubble Space Telescope spotted unusually small galaxies densely packed with red stars in the distant, young universe. They were nicknamed "red nuggets," not only because they are small and red but also their existence challenged current theories of galaxy formation, making them precious in astronomers' eyes.

New Model to Study Pulsational Dynamics of Molecular Cloud Fluctuations at Star Formation Sites

The birth of stars is an event that eludes intuitive understanding. It is the collapse of dense molecular clouds under their own weight that offers the best sites of star formation. Now, Pralay Kumar Karmakar from the Department of Physics at Tezpur University, Assam province, India, and his colleague have proposed a new model for investigating molecular cloud fluctuations at sites of star formation and thus are able to study their pulsational dynamics, in a paper published in EPJ D.

Largest Known Population of Globular Clusters Uncovered by Hubble

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered the largest known population of globular star clusters, an estimated 160,000, swarming like bees inside the crowded core of the giant grouping of galaxies known as Abell 1689.

ESO Telescopes Deliver Clearer View of Central Galactic Bulge

Two groups of astronomers have used data from ESO telescopes to make the best three-dimensional map yet of the central parts of the Milky Way. They have found that the inner regions take on a peanut-like, or X-shaped, appearance from some angles. This odd shape was mapped by using public data from ESO’s VISTA survey telescope along with measurements of the motions of hundreds of very faint stars in the central bulge.

Quantum Properties Are Lost Even in Completely Isolated Quantum Systems

How does a classical temperature form in the quantum world? An experiment at the Vienna University of Technology has directly observed the emergence and the spreading of a temperature in a quantum system. Remarkably, the quantum properties are lost, even though the quantum system is completely isolated and not connected to the outside world. The experimental results are being published in this week’s issue of “Nature Physics”.

Astatine is among the world’s rarest elements – with a maximum half-life of just eight hours, found in tiny amounts in natural radioactive decay chains, but also produced by bombarding bismuth with energetic atomic particles. Quasar 'Dancing' Behind a Gas Cloud in Milky Way Galaxy

Bonn astronomers discover how the image of a distant quasar splits into multiple images by the effects of a cloud of ionized gas in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Such events were predicted as early as in the 1970s, but the first evidence for one now has come from observations performed with the telescope array VLBA and analysed in the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy.

FQXi Awards Grant for Research on Structure of Quantum Information with Neutron Interferometry

The Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi) awards grants to “catalyze, support, and disseminate research on questions at the foundations of physics and cosmology”. The grant awarded to Emerson and his collaborators was one of 37 applications selected for funding this year from a total of 211 initial applications that were submitted by institutions, universities, colleges, laboratories, think tanks and businesses from around the world.
