A promising material is lining itself up as a candidate for a quantum memory. A team at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen is the first to succeed in performing high-resolution spectroscopy and microscopy on individual rare earth ions in a crystal.

A gas giant has been added to the short list of exoplanets discovered through direct imaging. It is located around GU Psc, a star three times less massive than the Sun and located in the constellation Pisces.

Measurements of Radiation Distortions from Early Universe May Help Estimate Mass of Neutrinos

Astrophysicists at UC San Diego have measured the minute gravitational distortions in polarized radiation from the early universe and discovered that these ancient microwaves can provide an important cosmological test of Einstein's theory of general relativity. These measurements have the potential to narrow down the estimates for the mass of ghostly subatomic particles known as neutrinos.

Turkey Signs Agreement for ‘Associate Membership’ to CERN

CERN Director General Rolf Heuer and Mr Taner Yildiz, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey today signed an agreement admitting Turkey to CERN Associate Membership, subject to ratification by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Meclis.

DOE Awards Early Career Research Program Funding to Three Brookhaven Physicists

Three physicists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory are among 35 scientists selected by DOE's Office of Science from 750 proposals to receive Early Career Research Program funding. Their work spans several subfields of physics-from describing the dynamics of high-energy collisions of atomic nuclei at particle colliders, to exploring magnetic excitations in materials that offer promise for carrying loss-free electric current, to developing new ways to track elusive neutrinos, particles that can pass through most forms of matter undetected.

Clusters of Stars May Not Be Forming From Inside Out

An important advance in understanding how clusters of stars like our sun are formed has been made by a team that includes seven astronomers at Penn State and two at other universities. Using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and infrared telescopes, the astronomers have shown that earlier theories about the process that creates star clusters in giant clouds of gas and dust cannot be correct.
