Research Team to Provide Tips to Material Scientists for Developing High-Temperature Super Conductors

Even physics can give pointers for energy saving. An international team working together with the Centre for Quantum Materials, run by the Max Planck Society in conjunction with the University of British Columbia (Canada), is now in a position to provide materials scientists with tips for the development of high-temperature superconductors, in a bid to make them earn their name.

Worldwide Fraud Challenge Launched for Quantum Physics-Based AtomID Anti-Counterfeiting Technology

Promotron Holdings Corporation, a Florida-based technology and licensing company, today announced the launch of its Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to host a 30 day worldwide fraud challenge. Unlike magnetic stripe, RFID, hologram and so-called “nano” technologies, AtomIDTM is a first-of-its-kind particles-based solution with the ability to “apply/store” data, inexpensively, onto a large variety of surfaces and products; and with the unprecedented capability to “read” the data with a low-cost reader at the point-of-sale or at any time.

Bizarre ‘Social’ Behavior Observed in Particles Containing ‘Charm’ Quarks

Protons and neutrons, the particles in an atomic nucleus, are made of smaller pieces called "quarks." Some types of quarks can form particles that exhibit surprising behaviors. Mark Mattson, Ph.D., assistant professor-research, and Paul Karchin, Ph.D., professor, from Wayne State University's Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, led a large collaborative effort of physicists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois reporting a bizarre "social" behavior of particles containing "charm" quarks: an observation of "charm mixing." The result was published this month in Physical Review Letters, the highly-regarded journal for particle physics.

External Magnetic Field Controls Quantum State Linked to Superconductivity

Superconductivity and magnetic fields are normally seen as rivals – very strong magnetic fields normally destroy the superconducting state. Physicists at the Paul Scherrer Institute have now demonstrated that a novel superconducting state is only created in the material CeCoIn5 when there are strong external magnetic fields. This state can then be manipulated by modifying the field direction.

Optical Dissipative Solitons Can Also Exist in Small Millimeter-Size Optical Resonators

Soliton water waves can travel several kilometers without any significant change in their shape or amplitude, as opposed to normal waves, which widen as they travel, and eventually disappear. Discovered over 150 years ago in water canals, solitons represent a surprising phenomenon of wave propagation and have been observed in natural phenomena including moving sand dunes and space plasmas.

Nanostripes Formed by Charge Carriers in High-Tc Superconductors Suppress Superconductivity

Even the so-called high-Tc superconductors still require very low temperatures of minus 200 degrees centigrade. While cooling down to these temperatures involves substantial effort, superconductors are already employed in many areas, e.g., for magnetic resonance tomography in medical applications.
