Cosmic Flashes Pinpointed to a Surprising Location in Space

Astronomers have been surprised by the closest source of the mysterious flashes in the sky known as fast radio bursts. Precision measurements with radio telescopes reveal that the bursts are made among old stars, and in a way that no one was expecting. The source of the flashes, in nearby spiral galaxy M 81, is the closest of its kind to Earth.

ARPES Reveals Dispersive Excitons in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Metallic Trichalcogenide

Excitons, a bound state of an electron and an electron hole, can form when a given material absorbs a photon above its bandgap energy. The photon excites an electron from the valence band into the conduction band, leaving behind a hole. This positively charged hole attracts the electron and the two can become bound by an electrostatic force known as the Coulomb effect-;this results in an exciton.
