OLEDs Combined with Inorganic Quantum Dots Hold Promise for Green Lighting Applications

It’s not easy going green. For home lighting applications, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) hold the promise of being both environmentally friendly and versatile. Though not as efficient as regular light-emitting diodes (LEDs), they offer a wider range of material choices and are more energy efficient than traditional lights. OLEDs can also be applied to flexible surfaces, which may lead to lights or television displays that can be rolled up and stowed in a pocket.

Quantum Dots Boost Ability of Bulk Semiconductors to Convert Heat into Power

High-performance thermoelectric materials that convert waste heat to electricity could one day be a source of more sustainable power. But they need to be a lot more efficient before they could be effective on a broad scale in places like power plants or military bases, researchers say.

3M Quantum Dot Enhancement Film in Final Stages of Scale-Up

3M announced today it is in the final stages of scale-up for its new 3M™ Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF). The new film allows up to 50 percent more color than current levels in liquid crystal display (LCD) devices. 3M has teamed with Nanosys, Inc., to produce the 3M QDEF solution specifically to deliver more color, and to make devices such as smart phones, tablets and televisions, lighter, brighter and more energy efficient.

QD Vision’s Color IQ Optical Components Win SID Gold Component of the Year Award

QD Vision, Inc., manufacturer of optical components for LCD applications, received the Gold Component of the Year Award from the Society for Information Display (SID) for its Color IQ optical components. This award represents one of the industry’s highest honors. The award will be presented at the SID symposium luncheon at Display Week in Vancouver, British Columbia and will be accepted by QD Vision CEO, Jason Carlson.

Quantum Materials to Relocate Tetrapod Quantum Dot Labs to Texas State University's STAR Park

Quantum Materials Corporation has chosen to relocate its tetrapod quantum dot laboratories to San Marcos, Texas to take advantage of facilities at STAR Park (Science, Technology and Academic Research Park). STAR Park is a non-profit incubator with roots from nearby Texas State University, the fifth largest university in Texas and one of eight Texas Emerging Research Universities.

Graphene Single-Electron Pump Creates Electron Flow by Shuttling Them into Quantum Dots

A new joint innovation by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the University of Cambridge could pave the way for redefining the ampere in terms of fundamental constants of physics. The world's first graphene single-electron pump (SEP), described in a paper today in Nature Nanotechnology, provides the speed of electron flow needed to create a new standard for electrical current based on electron charge.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have developed a way to introduce precisely four copper ions into each and every quantum dot.
