Novel Method to Assign Classes of Complex Quantum States to Geometric Objects

A property known as «entanglement» is a fundamental characteristic of quantum mechanics. Physicists and mathematicians at ETH Zurich show now how different forms of this phenomenon can be efficiently and systematically classified into categories. The method should help to fully exploit the potential of novel quantum technologies.

Researchers Succeed in Teleporting Information Between Two Clouds of Gas Atoms

Researchers have been able to teleport information from light to light at a quantum level for several years. In 2006, researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute succeeded in teleporting between light and gas atoms. Now the research group has succeeded in teleporting information between two clouds of gas atoms and to carry out the teleportation – not just one or a few times, but successfully every single time. The results are published in the scientific journal, Nature Physics.

Overwhelming Response to Singapore's Physics Education Seminar

More than 100 physics teachers attended Singapore's Physics Education Seminar (PES), held 3-6 June at NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. The event offered professional development: a day-long seminar of talks and tours was followed by two workshops on teaching resources developed by Canada's Perimeter Institute (PI), a world-renowned research centre in theoretical physics.

Study Results Provide New Insights into Possible Spintronic Materials

Ten years ago, scientists were convinced that a combination of manganese and gallium nitride could be a key material to create spintronics, the next generation of electronic devices that operate on properties found at the nanoscale. But researchers grew discouraged when experiments indicated that the two materials were as harmonious as oil and water.

New ALMA Observations Reveal Secrets of Planet Formation

Astronomers using the new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have imaged a region around a young star where dust particles can grow by clumping together. This is the first time that such a dust trap has been clearly observed and modelled. It solves a long-standing mystery about how dust particles in discs grow to larger sizes so that they can eventually form comets, planets and other rocky bodies. The results are published in the journal Science on 7 June 2013.
