Unique Stellar System with Two White Dwarf Stars and a Superdense Neutron Star Discovered

Astronomers using the National Science Foundation's Green Bank Telescope (GBT) have discovered a unique stellar system of two white dwarf stars and a superdense neutron star, all packed within a space smaller than Earth's orbit around the Sun. The closeness of the stars, combined with their nature, has allowed the scientists to make the best measurements yet of the complex gravitational interactions in such a system.

Physicist Explores Quantum Effects That Take Place in Atoms at Very Low Temperature

The UPV/EHU physicist Eneko Malatsetxebarria has explored, on a theoretical level, some quantum effects that take place in atoms at a very low temperature. Firstly, he has discovered that boson-type atoms and fermion-type ones can be mixed in a specific way. So he has made the necessary conditions for carrying out these experiments available to experimental physicists. Secondly, he has deduced how fermions would influence bosons in this case.

Novel Method to Cool Trapped Ions and Put Them into Entangled States

In Manas Mukherjee's laboratory at CQT, they have only recently trapped their first cloud of ions, but they've already got ambitious plans for what to do with them. Manas and his collaborators have proposed a novel way to cool trapped ions and put them into an entangled state. Such states can form the starting point for quantum computations or simulations. The work was published in Physical Review Letters in October.

Scientists Discover Previously-Unseen Binary Companions to Very Young Protostars

Using the new capabilities of the upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), scientists have discovered previously-unseen binary companions to a pair of very young protostars. The discovery gives strong support for one of the competing explanations for how double-star systems form.

Bizarre ‘Social’ Behavior Observed in Particles Containing ‘Charm’ Quarks

Protons and neutrons, the particles in an atomic nucleus, are made of smaller pieces called "quarks." Some types of quarks can form particles that exhibit surprising behaviors. Mark Mattson, Ph.D., assistant professor-research, and Paul Karchin, Ph.D., professor, from Wayne State University's Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, led a large collaborative effort of physicists at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois reporting a bizarre "social" behavior of particles containing "charm" quarks: an observation of "charm mixing." The result was published this month in Physical Review Letters, the highly-regarded journal for particle physics.
