An editorial in Nature Physics praises investment in the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, including the National Physical Laboratory's (NPL) Quantum Metrology Institute (QMI).
The article describes the government's £270 million investment in the establishment of the QMI at NPL and four new quantum hubs at the universities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Oxford and York.
The QMI will cover all of NPL's leading-edge quantum science and metrology research and provide the expertise and facilities needed for academia and industry to test, validate, and ultimately commercialise new quantum research and technologies.
The article also mentions NPLTime® - NPL's traceable and certified time distribution service for the financial sector - as an example of the technological outputs of focused research into quantum metrology.
The editorial concludes: "The hubs will play a central role in creating a generation of world-class researchers. The seeds of a new school of thought are being sown, they must now be nurtured."
