Bart Johnson at SLAC Honored with Farrel W. Lytle Award

Bart Johnson, who for the past 18 years has worked with his team to assist scientists with their synchrotron experiments and keep X-ray beamlines running at the Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, received an annual award Oct. 9 recognizing his efforts.

CQT Launches Projects on Hybrid Quantum Technologies and Space Based Quantum Key Distribution

Two new projects have launched at the Centre for Quantum Technologies thanks to funding awards by Singapore's National Research Foundation (NRF). The projects on "Hybrid Quantum Technologies" and "Space Based Quantum Key Distribution" will apply the Centre's expertise to advanced challenges. They have received funding under NRF's Competitive Research Programme grant scheme totalling over $10 million.

Niels Bohr Institute Researchers Receive YDUN Grants from Danish Council for Independent Research

Two researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute, astrophysicist Lise Bech Christensen from the DARK Cosmology Centre and particle physicist Stefania Xella from the Discovery Center have both received grants of approximately 6-6½ million kroner from YDUN under the Danish Council for Independent Research. YDUN are awarded primarily to promising young female researchers.

Experiment Confirms Existence of Quantum Selection Rules in Molecules

The experiments were carried out on endofullerenes, molecules of C60 into which smaller molecules of Hydrogen (H2) had been inserted. The results, published in Physical Review Letters, represent the first known example of a quantum selection rule found in a molecule.

JQI Scientists Obtain Interference Pattern with Extremely Narrow Fringes Using Incoherent Light

Observing the quantum behavior of light is a big part of Alan Migdall’s research at the Joint Quantum Institute. Many of his experiments depend on observing light in the form of photons---the particle complement of light waves---and sometimes only one photon at a time, using “smart” detectors that can count the number of individual photons in a pulse.

The American Physical Society has announced that it will present its 2015 Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize to David Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor in Spintronics and Quantum Information at the University of Chicago. The award is presented for outstanding contributions to physics by a single individual who also has exceptional skills in lecturing to diverse audiences.

Semimetal Tungsten Ditelluride’s Magnetoresistance Displays Unlimited Growth

Mazhar Ali, a fifth-year graduate student in the laboratory of Bob Cava, the Russell Wellman Moore Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University, has spent his academic career discovering new superconductors, materials coveted for their ability to let electrons flow without resistance. While testing his latest candidate, the semimetal tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), he noticed a peculiar result.
