NIST Experiment Confirms Quantum Communication is Feasible over Long Distances in Fiber

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have "teleported" or transferred quantum information carried in light particles over 100 kilometers (km) of optical fiber, four times farther than the previous record.

Adapt IP Ventures to Market MagiQ Technologies’ Quantum Computing and Security Related Patent Portfolio

MagiQ Technologies Inc., announced today that it has engaged Adapt IP Ventures, LLC to market its quantum computing and security related patent portfolio. With 49 US patents, the research and development company, MagiQ Technologies, maintains one of the largest quantum IP portfolios in the world, ranking right behind D-Wave Systems and Toshiba, yet still ahead of other major industry participants such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard and NEC.

ALICE Experiments Confirm Existence of Fundamental Symmetry in Nature

Scientists working with ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), a heavy-ion detector on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring, have made precise measurements of particle mass and electric charge that confirm the existence of a fundamental symmetry in nature. The investigators include Brazilian researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) and the University of Campinas (UNICAMP).

Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Receives U.S. DOE’s Critical Decision 2 Approval

DESI, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, is an exceptional apparatus designed to improve our understanding of the role of dark energy in the expansion history of the universe; it will do this by measuring the redshifts of more than 30 million galaxies and quasars, with unprecedented precision. The U.S. Department of Energy has announced its approval of Critical Decision 2 (CD–2), authorizing the project’s scientific scope, schedule, and funding profile.

Astronomers Discover New Intermediate-Mass Black Hole

Nearly all black holes come in one of two sizes: stellar mass black holes that weigh up to a few dozen times the mass of our sun or supermassive black holes ranging from a million to several billion times the sun's mass. Astronomers believe that medium-sized black holes between these two extremes exist, but evidence has been hard to come by, with roughly a half-dozen candidates described so far.

Fewer Pairs of Supermassive Black Holes Than Previously Thought

There may be fewer pairs of supermassive black holes orbiting each other at the cores of giant galaxies than previously thought, according to a new study by astronomers who analyzed data from the National Science Foundation's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope.
