Researchers Demonstrate Direct Measurements of Quantum State Associated with Orbital-Angular Momentum

Until recently measuring a 27-dimensional quantum state would have been a time-consuming, multistage process using a technique called quantum tomography, which is similar to creating a 3D image from many 2D ones. Researchers at the University of Rochester have been able to apply a recently developed, alternative method called direct measurement to do this in a single experiment with no post-processing.

Simplified Detector Measures Waveforms of Femtosecond Pulsed Laser Radiation

A team in the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics (LAP) at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics has taken another step toward the achievement of complete control over the waveform of pulsed laser light. Together with colleagues based at LMU and the Technische Universität München (TUM), they have constructed a detector which provides a detailed picture of the waveforms of laser pulses that last for a few femtoseconds (1 fs = 10-15 seconds).

Novel Technique Enables Deceleration of Continuous Beams of Polyatomic Polar Molecules

Does the electron possess an electric dipole moment? Will it be possible to achieve perfect control over chemical reactions between polyatomic molecules, or can one envisage quantum simulations and quantum computation with cold polar molecules? The fast-growing investigation of cold polar molecules holds promise for delivering answers to these long-standing questions that concern fundamental physics as well as future applications.

Joint Quantum Institute Fellow Gretchen Campbell Honored with 2013 PECASE Award

The 2013 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers were announced on Monday, December 23rd. JQI Fellow and NIST scientist Gretchen Campbell was among the honorees. Campbell currently runs two experiments on ultracold atoms.

Optical Dissipative Solitons Can Also Exist in Small Millimeter-Size Optical Resonators

Soliton water waves can travel several kilometers without any significant change in their shape or amplitude, as opposed to normal waves, which widen as they travel, and eventually disappear. Discovered over 150 years ago in water canals, solitons represent a surprising phenomenon of wave propagation and have been observed in natural phenomena including moving sand dunes and space plasmas.

New Quantum Lithography Protocol May Help Improve Resolution of Photolithography

Photolithography uses light beams to design thin geometric patterns on the substrates of semiconductors used in microelectronic devices. This is achieved using a chemical reaction on a light-sensitive chemical, called photoresist.

Prof. Theodor W. Hänsch Researcher in Quantum Optics and Laser Physics Named Fellow of NAI

The U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has announced on December 10, 2013, that Professor Theodor W. Hänsch has been elected Fellow of the NAI. The 94 newly elected NAI Fellows will be inducted by Deputy U.S. Commissioner for Patents Andy Faile, from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, during the 3rd Annual Conference of the National Academy of Inventors, on March 7, 2014, in Alexandria (Virginia), at the headquarters of the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
