Study Sheds Light on Time Scale of Supernova Explosions

Exploding supernovae are a phenomenon that is still not fully understood. The trouble is that the state of nuclear matter in stars cannot be reproduced on Earth. In a recent paper published in EPJ E, Yves Pomeau from the University of Arizona, USA, and his French colleagues from the CNRS provide a new model of supernovae represented as dynamical systems subject to a loss of stability, just before they explode.

Accelerating Exploitation of Quantum Mechanics for Highly Accurate Time Keeping

The Ministry of Defence's (MOD) Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) will today present a number of research projects to bring to market the science behind the world's most accurate atomic clocks. The Quantum Timing, Navigation and Sensing Showcase at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington aims to accelerate the exploitation of quantum mechanics for highly accurate time keeping and advanced, GPS-independent navigation within the UK defence sector and wider industry.

Astronomers Discover Cradles of Massive Stars

Astronomers have undertaken a new survey of the plane of our Milky Way and discovered a large quantity of cold, dense clumps of gas and dust, apparently the cradles of massive stars. A team headed by Timea Csengeri from the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn has now used the map, which was obtained by the APEX telescope at a wavelength of 0.87 millimetres, to estimate the time scale for the formation of stars.
