VLT Measures Lithium in Messier 54 Globular Star Cluster

The Milky Way galaxy is orbited by more than 150 globular star clusters, which are balls of hundreds of thousands of old stars dating back to the formation of the galaxy. One of these, along with several others in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer), was found in the late eighteenth century by the French comet hunter Charles Messier and given the designation Messier 54.

Researchers Successfully Fabricate Single-Photon Sources of Silicon Vacancy Centers

The research group led by Junichi Isoya, professor emeritus, University of Tsukuba, and Tokuyuki Teraji, principal researcher, Optical and Electronic Materials Unit, NIMS, succeeded for the first time in the world in fabricating single-photon sources of SiV centers which are one of the color centers in diamond during the growth of thin film diamond having high purity and crystalline quality by introducing them at extremely low concentrations.
