Most Stable Light Source to Study Exoplanets

In order to be able to detect planets comparable to Earth, the CHEOPS satellite, which will be sent into orbit at the end of 2017, must be able to measure the luminosity of a star with inimitable accuracy. In order to test CHEOPS detectors researchers need a stable source of light. However there was no instrument capable of producing a light source with sufficient stability to be used as a reference… until today. A team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, has just filed for a European patent.

Ambitious AIDA Mission Aims to Divert Orbit of Didymos Asteroid’s Didymoon

An ambitious joint US-European mission, called AIDA, is being planned to divert the orbit of a binary asteroid’s small moon, as well as to give us new insights into the structure of asteroids. A pair of spacecraft, the ESA-led Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) and NASA-led Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), will rendezvous with the Didymos asteroid and its small natural satellite, known informally as ‘Didymoon’.

NSF Awards $4.5 Million for Study of Cosmic Transients

A Caltech-led project that includes University of Maryland astronomers has been selected to receive $4.5 million over five years by the National Science Foundation through its Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) program. The project aims to improve our understanding of cosmic transients—ephemeral, extremely bright flashes of light that suddenly appear in the night sky, shining like new stars—a million to a billion times brighter than the sun—then quickly fading away.
