Astronomers Discover New Intermediate-Mass Black Hole

Nearly all black holes come in one of two sizes: stellar mass black holes that weigh up to a few dozen times the mass of our sun or supermassive black holes ranging from a million to several billion times the sun's mass. Astronomers believe that medium-sized black holes between these two extremes exist, but evidence has been hard to come by, with roughly a half-dozen candidates described so far.

Fewer Pairs of Supermassive Black Holes Than Previously Thought

There may be fewer pairs of supermassive black holes orbiting each other at the cores of giant galaxies than previously thought, according to a new study by astronomers who analyzed data from the National Science Foundation's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope.

An eight-year campaign to produce the superconductors for ITER’s powerful magnet systems is in its final stages, with nearly 70 percent of the conductor unit lengths accepted by the ITER Organization.

ERC Awards €150,000 for Project on Quantum Optical Magnetometer for Medical Applications

The ERC grant is a Proof of Concept supplemental grant to the large ERC Advanced Grant of 18 million kroner that Eugene Polzik received in October 2011. The purpose of this new grant is to develop practical applications from the research completed with the ERC Advanced Grant.

Former SLAC Researcher Honored with 2015 Klein Award for Work Related to Spintronics

Roopali Kukreja, a former researcher at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory who received her PhD in materials science at Stanford University last year, will be honored during a SLAC conference next month with the Melvin P. Klein Scientific Development Award for her X-ray studies of nanoscale magnetic and electrical properties of materials.

Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy Invaluable for Studying Star and Galaxy Formation

The Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy — also known as the Sculptor Dwarf Elliptical or the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal — is a dwarf spheroidal galaxy, and is one of the fourteen known satellite galaxies orbiting the Milky Way [1]. These galactic hitchhikers are located close by in the Milky Way’s extensive halo, a spherical region extending far beyond our galaxy’s spiral arms. As indicated by its name, this galaxy is located in the southern constellation of Sculptor and lies about 280 000 light-years away from Earth. Despite its proximity, the galaxy was only discovered in 1937, as its stars are faint and spread thinly across the sky.
