IARPA Awards IBM Scientists Major Grant to Advance Building Blocks for Universal Quantum Computer

IBM announced today that the U.S. Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) program has notified IBM that it will award its scientists a major multi-year research grant to advance the building blocks for a universal quantum computer.

Peter Zoller Honored with 2016 Herbert Walther Award

The Optical Society (OSA) and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) announced that the 2016 Herbert Walther Award will be presented to Peter Zoller, Institute for Theoretical Physics, Universität Innsbruck, Austria, for his pioneering discoveries and development of new interdisciplinary quantum science that unifies quantum optics, atomic, molecular, optical and condensed matter which have opened new paths toward future applications in quantum technology.

Researchers Propose New QKD-Based Quantum Private Query to Reduce Failure Probability

Cryptography is the approach to protect data secrecy in public environment. Certain cryptographic communications require not only the security of the transmitted message against eavesdropping from an outside adversary, but also the communicators' individual privacy against each other. Symmetrically private information retrieval (SPIR), which deals with the problem of private user queries to a database, is an example of such communication protocols.

APS Unveils Intermediate Energy X-ray Beamline

Researchers working to create next-generation electronic systems and to understand the fundamental properties of magnetism and electronics to tackle grand challenges such as quantum computing have a new cutting-edge tool in their arsenal. The Advanced Photon Source (APS), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility located at Argonne National Laboratory, recently unveiled a new capability: the Intermediate Energy X-ray (IEX) beamline at sector 29.

Researchers Develop New Tools to Test Fundamental Constituents of a Quantum Information Processor

A Stony Brook University research team has developed new tools to test the fundamental constituents of a quantum information processor, a device that manipulates data based on quantum mechanics rather than classical physics and therefore would have computing power well beyond the capabilities of a classic computer. Their findings are published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Supercomputers Can Help Interpret Large Hadron Collider Data

Argonne physicists are using Mira to perform simulations of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments with a leadership-class supercomputer for the first time, shedding light on a path forward for interpreting future LHC data. Researchers at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) helped the team optimize their code for the supercomputer, which has enabled them to simulate billions of particle collisions faster than ever before.
