The Department of Chemistry is ranked as the premier academic research institute in chemistry in Norway. The Department of Chemistry is described in the international assessment of Norwegian chemistry (2009) as the leading academic research institute for chemistry in Norway. Here you will find a broad educational offer of high quality, as well as research of top, international level. A large and increasing portion of activity is externally financed, and the Department of Chemistry currently has some 200 employees.
The department has a large, internal contact network at UiO, and not least externally with Norwegian and international universities, with the Norwegian academic sector and with Norwegian and international business.
The Department is host for a centre for research-based innovation in the area of Innovative natural gas processes and products (inGAP) and shares a centre for outstanding research, the Centre for theoretical and computational chemistry (CTCC) with the University of Tromsø. The Department also has considerable stock in a centre for renewable energy with emphasis on solar cells, and is coordinator for two large EU projects. The Department educates graduates for business, public administration and the university academic sector, but also for the public school system and academia.
