Some Red Dwarf Stars Found to Have Habitable, Earth-Sized Planets

Using publicly available data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) have found that six percent of red dwarf stars have habitable, Earth-sized planets. Since red dwarfs are the most common stars in our galaxy, the closest Earth-like planet could be just 13 light-years away.

Proposal to Study Random Numbers from Quantum Processes Receives Singapore MOE Award

Researcher to Advance Study of Quantum Dots Core-Shell Interface with NSF Award

Colin Heyes, an assistant professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has received a $650,000 Faculty Early Career Development Program award from the National Science Foundation. The award was given to further his investigation of the interfaces between the core and shell of colloidal quantum dots.

Retention Theory May Explain Dancing Ribbon of Energetic Neutral Atoms in Space

The vast edges of our solar system – the boundary at the edge of our heliosphere where material streaming out from the sun interacts with the galactic material – is essentially invisible. It emits no light and no conventional telescope can see it. However, particles from inside the solar system bounce off this boundary and neutral atoms from that collision stream inward. Those particles can be observed by instruments on NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX).

JQI Scientists Use Quantum Dots, Microfluidics and Plasmonics to Study Optical Nanostructures

Modern telecommunications happens because of fast electrons and fast photons. Can it get better? Can Moore's law---the doubling of computing power ever 18 months or so---be sustained? Can the compactness (nm-scale components) of electronics be combined with the speed of photonics? Well, one such hybrid approach is being explored at the Joint Quantum Institute (*), where scientists bring together three marvelous physics research fields: microfluidics, quantum dots, and plasmonics to probe and study optical nanostructures with spatial accuracy as fine as 12 nm.

AAS Awards Bruno Rossi Prize for Research on Gamma-Ray Pulsars

To say that Alice Harding, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., has a passion for pulsars is a bit of an understatement. On Jan. 24, she was named a winner of the 2013 Bruno Rossi prize together with Roger Romani of Stanford University. The award recognizes their work in establishing a theoretical framework for understanding how pulsars emit gamma rays, the most powerful form of light.

Quantum Information Stored in Atom Transferred Onto Particle of Light

Not only do optical fibers transmit information every day around the world at the speed of light, but they can also be harnessed for the transport of quantum information. In the current issue of Nature Photonics, a research team of Innsbruck physicists led by Rainer Blatt and Tracy Northup report how they have directly transferred the quantum information stored in an atom onto a particle of light. Such information could then be sent over optical fiber to a distant atom.
