Scientists Observe Converging Point of Classical and Quantum Behavior

If we are ever to fully harness the power of light for use in optical devices, it is necessary to understand photons - the fundamental unit of light. Achieving such understanding, however, is easier said than done. That's because the physical behavior of photons - similar to electrons and other sub-atomic particles - is characterized not by classical physics, but by quantum mechanics.

USPTO Awards Whitewood Patent for Secure Multi-Party Communication Compatible with Quantum Key Distribution

Whitewood Encryption Systems, Inc., a builder of next-generation systems of data encryption that leverage advanced cryptography technologies emerging from U.S. centers of research excellence, announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent No. 8,929,554, with claims covering methods and systems for secure multi-party communication that are compatible with various key distribution protocols, including quantum key distribution (QKD).

Orbital Angular Momentum for Encoding Information Increases Possibility of High-Dimensional Quantum Key Distribution

Researchers at the University of Rochester and their collaborators have developed a way to transfer 2.05 bits per photon by using "twisted light." This remarkable achievement is possible because the researchers used the orbital angular momentum of the photons to encode information, rather than the more commonly used polarization of light.

CQP Researchers Publish Paper on Active Temporal Multiplexing of Photons in arXiv

A paper co-authored by researchers including Gabriel Mendoza, Raffaele Santagati, Jack Munns, Lizzy Hemsley, Mateusz Piekarek, Enrique Martin-Lopez, Graham Marshall, Damien Bonneau, Mark Thompson and Jeremy O'Brien from the Centre for Quantum Photonics has been published in arXiv this month.

The 2014 chemistry Nobel Prize recognized important microscopy research that enabled greatly improved spatial resolution. This innovation, resulting in nanometer resolution, was made possible by making the source (the emitter) of the illumination quite small and by moving it quite close to the object being imaged.

Novel Technique Creates Ultra-Precise Laser Beam Using a Quantum Frequency Filter

Atomic clocks are the most accurate clocks in the world. In an atomic clock, electrons jumping from one orbit to another decides the clock's frequency. To get the electrons to jump, researchers shine light on the atoms using stabilised laser light. However, the laser light has to have a very precise frequency to trigger very precise electron jumps. It is however challenging to get the laser light frequency ultra precise - there will always be a little 'noise'.

Quantum Imaging Centre Opens at the Glasgow Science Centre

Based in Glasgow, QuantIC, the Quantum Imaging Centre, will commercialise cameras built with newly-developed quantum technology, with the potential to create affordable handheld video cameras capable of seeing areas of the spectrum only previously visible with large and expensive devices. More than 30 industry partners will help QuantIC’s imaging systems bring new benefits to the UK economy.
