Peter E. Toschek of Institut für Laser-Physik Wins Herbert Walther Award

The Optical Society (OSA) and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) are proud to announce that the 2015 Herbert Walther Award will be presented to Peter E. Toschek of the Institut für Laser-Physik, Universität Hamburg, Germany for his pioneering experiments to laser cooling and trapping of single ions and for his contributions to the understanding of the principles of laser spectroscopy as well as of atomic physics.

Controlled Emission and Splitting into Separate Electron Pairs from Semiconductor Quantum Dot

In quantum optics, generating entangled and spatially separated photon pairs (e.g. for quantum cryptography) is already a reality. So far, it has, however, not been possible to demonstrate an analogous generation and spatial separation of entangled electron pairs in solids.

Atomic Memory with Outstanding Parameters for Quantum Information Technologies

Neither quantum computers nor quantum cryptography will become prevalent technologies without memory systems able to manipulate quantum information easily and effectively. The Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw has recently made inroads into popularizing quantum information technologies by creating an atomic memory with outstanding parameters and an extremely simple construction.

CSIRO’s Australia Telescope Compact Array Connects with Korean Radio Telescopes

The current thrust of our tests are to perform mm-VLBI observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) at 43 and 86GHz. The 7900 km baseline (distance) between Australia and Korea provides resolutions of 80 micro-arcseconds at the higher frequency, or 20 billionths of a degree. This is sufficient to resolve Neil Armstrong's footprints on the moon from Earth, an astounding level of detail for a radio telescope.
