Entanglement Can Improve Performance of Optical Sensors

The extraordinary promise of quantum information processing — solving problems that classical computers can’t, perfectly secure communication — depends on a phenomenon called “entanglement,” in which the physical states of different quantum particles become interrelated. But entanglement is very fragile, and the difficulty of preserving it is a major obstacle to developing practical quantum information systems.

Quantum Imaging Centre Opens at the Glasgow Science Centre

Based in Glasgow, QuantIC, the Quantum Imaging Centre, will commercialise cameras built with newly-developed quantum technology, with the potential to create affordable handheld video cameras capable of seeing areas of the spectrum only previously visible with large and expensive devices. More than 30 industry partners will help QuantIC’s imaging systems bring new benefits to the UK economy.

RUB Engineers Optimize Spin Lasers for Rapid Data Transfer

RUB engineers have developed a new concept for accelerating data transfer in server farms. To this end, the team at the Chair of Photonics and Terahertz Technology applies a quantum-mechanical variable, i.e. the spin. RUBIN, the science magazine published by the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, reports on how researchers optimise so-called spin lasers for data transfer.

Joint Quantum Institute Fellows Receive 2015 Sloan Research Fellowship

Two JQI Fellows, Mohammad Hafezi and Vladimir Manucharyan, are among the four University of Maryland faculty members that have been awarded 2015 Sloan Research Fellowships. PSI Swiss Light Source Generates Light with Properties Similar to SwissFEL X-Ray Laser

For many years, PSI researchers have been testing experimental methods that will provide insights into novel materials for electronic devices. Using a special trick to make the Swiss Light Source (SLS) at PSI generate light with similar properties to that of PSI's x-ray laser SwissFEL, the researchers were able to demonstrate that the experiments planned for SwissFEL are possible and they are now building an experimental station at SwissFEL.
