Squeezed States Optimal for Using Quantum Properties to Improve Measurement Precision

Extremely precise measurements of distances are key in all techniques used to detect gravitational waves. To increase this precision, physicists have started using quantum effects linked with photons. A paper published in "Physical Review A" by Polish and German physicists shows that it is not necessary to use quantum light states more refined than the squeezed coherent states available currently.

Controlled Molecule Samples for Matter-Wave Experiments Can Help Investigate Limits of Quantum-Mechanical Wave Properties

For his work on the control of complex molecules, Professor Jochen Küpper from the Hamburg Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL, DESY and the University of Hamburg) is granted two million euros by the European Research Council (ERC). The council supports Küpper’s project "Controlling the Motion of Complex Molecules and Particles" (COMOTION) through an ERC Consolidator Grant for five years starting in early 2014.

Amazing Image of Curious Clouds Around NGC 3572 Star Cluster

Astronomers at ESO have captured the best image so far of the curious clouds around the star cluster NGC 3572. This new image shows how these clouds of gas and dust have been sculpted into whimsical bubbles, arcs and the odd features known as elephant trunks by the stellar winds flowing from this gathering of hot young stars. The brightest of these cluster stars are much heavier than the Sun and will end their short lives as supernova explosions.
