Himiko Most Likely a Primordial Galaxy

The Subaru Telescope, an 8.2-meter telescope operated by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, has been combing the night sky since 1999. Located at the Mauna Kea Observatories in Hawaii, the telescope has been systematically surveying each degree of space, whether it looks promising or not, in search of objects worthy of further investigation.

AIP and AAS Honor Astrophysicist Piero Madau with 2014 Dannie Heineman Prize

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Astronomical Society (AAS) are pleased to announce that astrophysicist Piero Madau has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Dannie Heineman Prize for Astrophysics, which is given annually to recognize outstanding work in the field.

Quantum Physics-Based ‘One-Shot’ Memory Unit Could Boost Computer Security Systems

Computer security systems may one day get a boost from quantum physics, as a result of recent research from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Computer scientist Yi-Kai Liu has devised away to make a security device that has proved notoriously difficult to build—a "one-shot" memory unit, whose contents can be read only a single time.

Astronomers Discover Three Planets Orbiting Stars in Cluster Messier 67

Astronomers have used ESO's HARPS planet hunter in Chile, along with other telescopes around the world, to discover three planets orbiting stars in the cluster Messier 67. Although more than one thousand planets outside the Solar System are now confirmed, only a handful have been found in star clusters. Remarkably one of these new exoplanets is orbiting a star that is a rare solar twin — a star that is almost identical to the Sun in all respects.

Fermi National Accelerator Lab’s Family Open House to Take Place Feb. 9, 2014

The Family Open House is one of the most popular annual events hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This year’s event will take place on Feb. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. in Wilson Hall. It will include activities for the whole family, from hands-on science exhibits to tours of some of the lab’s attractions – including the massive electromagnet that was brought to Fermilab last summer.

Simplified Detector Measures Waveforms of Femtosecond Pulsed Laser Radiation

A team in the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics (LAP) at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics has taken another step toward the achievement of complete control over the waveform of pulsed laser light. Together with colleagues based at LMU and the Technische Universität München (TUM), they have constructed a detector which provides a detailed picture of the waveforms of laser pulses that last for a few femtoseconds (1 fs = 10-15 seconds).

NuSTAR Images ‘Hand of God’ – the Energized Remains of a Dead Star

Two new views from NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, showcase the telescope's talent for spying objects near and far. One image shows the energized remains of a dead star, a structure nicknamed the "Hand of God" after its resemblance to a hand. Another image shows distant black holes buried in blankets of dust.
