Neighboring Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies Devoid of Star-Forming Gas

Astronomers using the National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia, along with data from other large radio telescopes, have discovered that our nearest galactic neighbors, the dwarf spheroidal galaxies, are devoid of star-forming gas, and that our Milky Way Galaxy is to blame.

American Physical Society Honors Minnesota Graduate with 2014 Leroy Apker Award

Recent University of Minnesota graduate Michael J. Veit has won the 2014 Leroy Apker award of the American Physical Society. The prestigious Apker award recognizes outstanding achievements and potential for future scientific accomplishment in physics by undergraduate students. Only two winners are selected, one from a Ph.D.-granting institution, and one from a non-Ph.D-granting institution.

Global Network of Smartphones Could Become Planet-Sized Cosmic Ray Detector

Your smartphone could become part of the world's largest telescope. A team led by UC Irvine physicist Daniel Whiteson and UC Davis physicist Michael Mulhearn has designed an app to turn the global network of smartphones into a planet-sized cosmic ray detector, according to a paper posted today to the physics website arXiv.

Chemists at Ludwig-Maximilias-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich have synthesized a ferromagnetic superconducting compound that is amenable to chemical modification, opening the route to detailed studies of this rare combination of physical properties.

CQT Launches Projects on Hybrid Quantum Technologies and Space Based Quantum Key Distribution

Two new projects have launched at the Centre for Quantum Technologies thanks to funding awards by Singapore's National Research Foundation (NRF). The projects on "Hybrid Quantum Technologies" and "Space Based Quantum Key Distribution" will apply the Centre's expertise to advanced challenges. They have received funding under NRF's Competitive Research Programme grant scheme totalling over $10 million.
