Mysterious Communication at a Distance between Superfluid Helium Reservoirs More Common Than Previously Thought

For several years, it has been known that superfluid helium housed in reservoirs located next to each other acts collectively, even when the channels connecting the reservoirs are too narrow and too long to allow for substantial flow. A new theoretical model reveals that the phenomenon of mysterious communication "at a distance" between fluid reservoirs is much more common than previously thought.

CSIRO’s Australia Telescope Compact Array Connects with Korean Radio Telescopes

The current thrust of our tests are to perform mm-VLBI observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) at 43 and 86GHz. The 7900 km baseline (distance) between Australia and Korea provides resolutions of 80 micro-arcseconds at the higher frequency, or 20 billionths of a degree. This is sufficient to resolve Neil Armstrong's footprints on the moon from Earth, an astounding level of detail for a radio telescope.

The meeting was organised by CQT's Dagomir Kaszlikowski, Oh Choo Hiap and Pawel Kurzynski and was supported by a grant from the United States' Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi).

Ultracold Atomic Gas Cooling Technique for Mechanical Quantum Systems

Physicists at the University of Basel have developed a new cooling technique for mechanical quantum systems. Using an ultracold atomic gas, the vibrations of a membrane were cooled down to less than 1 degree above absolute zero. This technique may enable novel studies of quantum physics and precision measurement devices, as the researchers report in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Gas Cloud G2 in Galactic Centre May Be Part of More Extensive Gas Streamer

In November, astronomers at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics presented new observations of the gas cloud G2 in the galactic centre originally discovered in 2011. These data are in remarkably good agreement with an on-going tidal disruption. As a complete surprise came the discovery that the orbit of G2 matches that of another gas cloud detected a decade ago, suggesting that G2 might actually be part of a much more extensive gas streamer. This would also match some of the proposed scenarios that try to explain the presence of G2. One such model is that G2 is originating from the wind from a massive star.

As a founding member of the Supernova Cosmology Project, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute professor Heidi Newberg will share the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics with members of two competing teams that discovered Dark Energy. CERN Launches Open Data Portal for LHC Experiments

CERN launched today its Open Data Portal where data from real collision events, produced by the LHC experiments will for the first time be made openly available to all. It is expected that these data will be of high value for the research community, and also be used for education purposes.
